On July 8, the Legislature's two-house budget committee approved a balanced spending plan for California's 2008-09 fiscal year, which began last week. Without quick approval of a state budget, payments to many programs will stop, including community colleges.

The Legislature made tough choices and balanced the budget through a combination of budget cuts and revenue increases. While the League doesn't endorse any specific tax proposal, the budget much better addresses student access and success needs in our community colleges than previous "cuts-only" proposals.
